Dashboard Features:
Welcome to the Utah Prison Population Projections Project! This dashboard provides snapshots and five-year projections of Utah’s prison population, benchmarked against the Utah Department of Corrections’ capacity limits. It also highlights long-term trends in the state’s prison population. Users can hover over selected graphics for interactive data exploration. The dashboard is organized into six sections, summarized below:
1. 🏛 Overview
Population Snapshots: Presents point-in-time views of the current prison population and the projected population five years ahead.
- Prison Population is measured by the average number of individuals incarcerated on any given day within a quarter.
Net Admissions Over Time: Shows trends in net admissions (admissions minus releases) to illustrate how the population changes over time. When admissions exceed releases, the prison population increases.
2. 📈 Projections
Five-Year Forecasts: Provides annual population projections over the next five years to guide strategic decision-making.
Gender Breakdowns: Includes projections for the total population as well as separate trends for male and female populations.
3. ↕️ Trends
- Average Daily Population (ADP) Trends: Tracks ADP by primary offense type, admission type, and gender to identify key factors that are contributing to population changes.
4. ⚠️ Capacity
- Capacity Benchmarking: Compares current and projected prison populations against UDC’s 3 capacity measures to assess system pressures and available space.
5. 📝 Methodology
- Methodology: Details our process, data sources, and projection methods for enhanced transparency.
